My Car Rental Experience in Malta
- Cost: Weekly rates at DiscoverCars start at €25/week, (~€3.60/day), more reputable companies at €46/week. To avoid paying additional fees, follow my Rental Excess Insurance Guide.
- Provider Rating: SIXT. 5/5 Super smooth. Not much upselling, no issues at the return, left the key in their drop-off box.

Sleeping in a Rental in Malta
- Legality: No law against sleeping in cars in Malta. Such a peaceful place, especially in the off-season. Didn’t see anybody else doing it. Check the park4night app for potential overnight spots and refer to my Car Sleeping Guide for more details.
- Vehicle Audit: Toyota Aygo X. Small, super fuel efficient and surprisingly comfy! As a 190cm / 6’2 man I slept comfortably with my head in the boot and feet between the two front seats. It fitted the two of us. Seats folded totally flat.
- Fuel: Fuel is heavily subsidized by the government and the prices are capped, making them effectively the same across all gas stations. Malta has some of the lowest fuel prices in Europe.
- Tolls: All public roads in Malta are free to use.
- Parking: Lots of free on-street parking. Lots of tourists places have informal “attendants”. While not mandatory to tip them (there’s even signs telling you that), they will make you feel pressured to do so.

Other Tips
- Flights: Frequently as low as €10-€15 to Italy, Spain, France, Poland, the UK, and many more. Fierce competition between Ryanair and Wizz Air, incentivized by government strategies to boost tourism.
- Audio guides: They are included with admission across the main sights. Great quality.
- Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum: Due to limited capacity, very hard to book. In high season, the visit often needs to be booked 3-4 months in advance, in low season closer to 1 month. Last minute tickets can be purchased in person a day before, but there’s no guaranteed availability and they’re more pricy at €50. Arrive early to queue.
- Rideshare Apps: Affordable in Malta. Bolt generally slightly cheaper than Uber. A ride from the airport to Valletta takes 15-20 minutes and costs €12-€20.
