A daily budget of €10-€40 is a choice. One day of work in Australia funds my entire weekly trip.

My Car Rental Experience in Sicily

  • Cost: Catania is a hub for ultra-low-cost. Off-season weekly rates at DiscoverCars.com often start at €10-€20. To avoid paying additional fees, follow my Rental Excess Insurance Guide.
  • Provider Rating: 4.5/5. I used Viaggiare. I was skeptical due to the super low price, but the experience was great. There was no excessive insurance upselling at the counter, and the return process was smooth. The inspection was efficient, they pointed out one scratch, but I had a photo to prove that it had been there already.

Sleeping in a Rental in Sicily

  • Legality: No national prohibition exists in Italy. Car sleeping is generally tolerated. Check park4night app for good camping spots and refer to my Car Sleeping Guide for more details.
  • Infrastructure: Minimal. Public toilets are scarce and often dirty. Lidl has reliable toilets.
  • Vehicle Audit: Ford Tourneo. Avoid. Lured by great pricing, I experimented with a bigger car. Despite its size, the seats don’t fold flat, making the cargo area useless for sleeping. It also takes more fuel and is cumbersome on narrow Sicilian roads – stick to smaller, agile cars.
  • Fuel: Use Google Maps for real-time fuel prices. Use self-service pumps. If an attendant helps you, you will be charged a higher rate.
  • Tolls: Backroads are free and more scenic. Set Google Maps navigation to “Avoid Tolls”.

Local Tips

  • Flights: Flights to Malta or within Italy are often as cheap as €15 with Ryanair or Wizz Air.
  • Etna Eruptions: Mount Etna is an exceptionally active volcano. During an eruption, you can often hike safely near lava streams (check local Facebook groups for current conditions). For maximum visibility of the glow, arrive before sunrise or after sunset. During February 2025, we were within meters of a lava flow – it was awesome.
  • Affordable Eats: Pizza in Sicily is incredibly cheap and delicious. In local spots, you can find a full pizza for just €5.
  • Valley of the Temples: Free on the first Sunday of the month, otherwise €14/person (or €7 for EU nationals under 25).
