Getting There

Terceira was the last leg of a 5-island trip. SATA Air Açores is the only airline flying between the Central Group islands (Faial, Pico, São Jorge). The cheapest way to combine multiple islands is the Skyscanner Multi-City search: select 3 flights in one booking. We got Lisbon–Horta, Horta–Ponta Delgada, and Ponta Delgada–Terceira for €102.29 per person via Trip.com, registered luggage included. Booking directly was double the price.

We flew out Terceira–Lisbon with Ryanair for €38 per person. (2026 update: Ryanair cancelled all flights to Terceira. The only options now are Azores Airlines (SATA) and TAP Air Portugal.)

Car Rental at Lajes Airport, Terceira

• Cost: We paid €84.54 for 4 days (€21.14/day) via DiscoverCars (my review).

• Provider: Ilha Verde. 5/5. No issues whatsoever. Fully professional, quick pickup.
• Vehicle: Renault Clio (booked: Economy Class – Renault Clio or similar).
• Excess: €1,300. Deposit: the voucher stated €1,300, but the company agreed to transfer our €1,200 deposit from the previous rental we had with them in São Jorge. They also accept debit cards. • Tolls: No toll roads in the Azores.
• Fuel: Prices locked and updated monthly by the government – cheaper than mainland Portugal due to lower taxes.

Sleeping in a Rental Car in Terceira

Renault Clio. 4/5. Manageable. Our second time with this model on the trip – it’s what booking “Economy Class” likely gets you on aggregate sites. We levelled the slight incline and uneven surface with clothes stuffed under the inflated mats. Slept well. Full sleeping audit: Best Rental Cars to Sleep In.

• Legality: Legally grey area, generally tolerated – but nobody doing it on Terceira. No camping behavior (chairs, tables outside the car). Full guide: Sleeping in Rental Cars.
• Facilities: Some public toilets, generally clean. Many natural pools for swimming, separated from the ocean (zona balnear).
• Overnight Spots: Few spots marked on park4night in Terceira. We used Organic Maps to find secluded parking lots. You can add your spots in the app – very helpful in less visited places. I’ve also linked my actual sleeping spots in the Route section below.
• Backup Accommodation: Booking.com generally has the widest selection and lowest prices, but you need to manually sort by lowest price. I recommend filtering to 7.0+.

Food

No Lidl on Terceira. The main supermarket option is Continente – two branches, one in Praia da Vitória and one in Angra do Heroísmo. We resupplied at both. A Pingo Doce is under construction as of 2026.

Route

Flew in from São Miguel, picked up the car, first stop Continente in Praia da Vitória for supplies. Drove up to Facho Viewpoint, then west to Biscoitos – natural pools, black lava rock houses, no tourists. Slept at the trailhead parking lot of the Black Mysteries Trail (PRC01TER).

Day 1

Did PRC01TER first thing, in total fog. Then we rushed driving up to Miradouro da Serra de Santa Bárbara, the tallest point of Terceira at 1,021m – the forecast promised a good weather window. It was clear until around halfway, then we drove straight into thick cloud. Nothing to see above that point. Check Mountain-Forecast.com for cloud cover altitude before going up. Drove west to Miradouro da Ponta do Queimado, then did the Rocha de Chambre hike – foggy all day, but the forest had a lot of charm regardless. Slept at the Furnas do Enxofre parking lot. Nobody around. You can smell sulphur.

Day 2

Started with PRC10TER – Algar do Carvão/Furnas do Enxofre loop, 7km. Spent the afternoon in Angra do Heroísmo – old town, multiple churches, a beach, traditional houses – very picturesque place, on the UNESCO list. The Angra do Heroísmo Museum is big for a town this size – solid coverage of island history, only €2 entry.

Hiked around Miradouro do Pico das Cruzinhas – if you’re lucky and in the right season, you can spot some whales. Evening: Passagem das Bestas (PRC07TER), 4km, then up to Miradouro da Serra do Cume – first clear viewpoint of the trip. The interior plains are intensely green. Looped back to Furnas do Enxofre for another very peaceful night.

Day 3

Down the southern coast from Zona Balnear do Negrito, back through Angra for resupply at Continente. Continued east to Gruta das Agulhas – a lava tube accessible from the coast. Many people miss it, as you can see from Google Maps reviews – don’t give up, it’s there. Organic Maps had the access trail clearly marked. Bring a flashlight, you can spend solid 30 minutes inside. Afternoon: Fortes de São Sebastião coastal hike, almost 9km, 2–3 hours. Free-roaming cows on the path, be careful. We swam at the sheltered outdoor pools near Porto Judeu. Found a good sleeping spot close to Lajes.

Day 4

Morning hike – Baías da Agualva (PR2TER), northern coast, 5km, around 1.5–2 hours. Walked around Praia da Vitória afterwards – old houses, churches, local beach swim. Returned the car at Lajes Airport, which is close to town.

Season

We went early April – off-season, perfect timing. Temperatures were mild throughout – the Azores don’t vary much across the year thanks to the ocean. It never dropped below 10°C at night, which was fine for car sleeping.

June–September is warmest, driest, and longest days. July and August are peak season – but Terceira never gets crowded. April–June is the best window for whale watching.

Currency

Euro. Cards accepted everywhere – we didn’t use cash at all.

SIM

Any EU SIM works under Roam Like at Home – no need to buy a local one. If you don’t have one, check eSIMDB, filter by data needed, trip length, and sort by price.

Lyca Mobile Portugal periodically runs 50GB for €4/month promo – worth checking their site before buying anything else.

Language

Portuguese. The Azorean accent is famously thick due to the islands’ remoteness – even native Portuguese speakers sometimes struggle with it. Learn a few basics: bom dia (good morning), boa tarde (good afternoon), olá (hello), obrigado/obrigada (thanks). English is spoken in hospitality and tourism but not reliably outside of it.

• Angra do Heroísmo Museum: €2 entry. Big for a town this size.
• Fuel: Cheaper than mainland Portugal – government-locked prices, updated monthly.
• Overnight Spots: Few on park4night – use Organic Maps to find secluded parking lots. Actual spots linked in the Route section.
